As the second most populous city in the United States, Los Angeles brings people from all over the world, often for a new experience or change of career. Whether you’re working in the film industry or following your dreams in any other field, there are a number of people who come to LA for work. But the cost of living — especially housing — can be quite steep in LA, so not everyone who works in the City of Angels can live downtown. The question is where should you live if you work in LA.

Consider Your Commute

Where will you be working in LA? Many jobs are downtown, and downtown is the best destination if you plan to take public transportation, but public transportation in LA can be notoriously poor. It’s better to take a car if you can. Downtown is also only about a 10 minute drive from Hollywood, if you work in the film industry. San Pedro is a once independent community that exists outside of the congested downtown areas, but it’s only about a 30 minute commute from downtown, and 40 minutes from Hollywood.

Cost of Living & Housing

It’s hardly a secret that the cost of living in LA is steep. The closer you are to downtown, the steeper that cost will be. San Pedro, on the other hand, has a slightly lower cost of living on average compared to LA in general. Most of this difference comes down to housing. You’ll have an easier time finding an apartment or house that you love that fits within your budget in San Pedro than you will in trendy neighborhoods like Echo Park or Koreatown. The lower rent will help to ease the cost of living in general.

Beachside Living

Many people — especially young professionals — who move from outside of California imagine living near the beach and taking a trip there at the drop of the hat. That’s certainly one of the benefits of living in California, and LA isn’t far from the beach, but living in LA proper, you likely won’t see the water from your apartment by any means. In fact, between commutes and the demands of a busy, working lifestyle, you might find that you don’t make it to the beach as much as you originally hoped.

However, it’s easier to get to the beach when you live in San Pedro. San Pedro is located along the coast, with several beaches and parks to enjoy. The La Corona Del Mar apartment complex is just a mile’s walk from the harbor, so you’re never far from the water.
